One of my most recent BEST days in education was when my 5th grade STEAM students
finished up their egg drop contraptions and we went outside to test them out. The students
had one day to plan how they wanted to spend their money on supplies to build their egg
drop contraptions. They then had 2 days to actually buy the supplies using their allotted
budget, and to build their contraptions to protect their eggs. On day four, we went out to the
bleachers on the football field, everyone climbed to the top, and they dropped their eggs
at the same time. We then looked at the successes and not so successful contraptions and
talked about why some did well and why some did not do well. After that, we cleaned up,
went inside, and the students individually filled out a reflection sheet. It is so fun to see
my students truly enjoy the learning that took place when we did the egg drop.
