I had a student my first year of teaching who was not invested in learning or himself. He goofed around a lot, was inattentive and detached. However, I knew there was much more inside of him. I spoke with his parents and they had mentioned they had always been concerned with his attention and had finally decided to try medicine. I had shared that medicine certainly can help with ADHD, but it is not always immediate or easy. Focus is the first step, but confidence is the next. Throughout the year, I worked hard on building this student's confidence in himself. He believed he wasn't smart - but he was so wrong. I broke down those walls and showed him how capable he was of learning and succeeding. Watching this happen, was enough. His parents endlessly thanking me, was a bonus. But, what I got in the mail one day was BEST DAY EVER material. It reiterated why I chose this profession. Anthony selected me for his school project, the My Hero project. https://bit.ly/32NpaKf
I received a CD in the mail (I'm aging myself) of a presentation...about ME. He chose ME as his hero for helping him see that he CAN learn and CAN achieve.
Many days are hard and some day are unbearable. But those days, that happen once or twice a year, that bring tears to your eyes and warmth to your heart override every bad day.
