Best Day in Education

My best day in education ever, was the first time that I did a service learning project with my 8th grade Spanish students.  We were learning about sports, sports vocabulary and what type of sports are played in other countries.  We read multiple articles on service organizations that focus on bringing sports to underpriveliged populations.  One of the articles we read, focused on One World Play, which is an orgainzation that works to bring indestructible soccer balls to children who do not have access to sports equipment.  The students decided that they wanted to help this organization and they came up with a variety of ways to get the word out and to raise money.  Their final project was to orgainze and run a student vs teacher soccer game.   They also organized a VIP section, in which students had to donate money to sit in that section.  They organized music, raffled off prizes and gave away one of the indestructible soccer balls.  My students come back to visit me frequently and they all state that the soccer game was the most memorable moment of middle school.  It makes me happy just thinking about it.
